Yes, if you eat food that contains less calories than you can burn off through exercise or work, then by the physical process which is your metabolism, your body size should reduce. But that is only part of the story.
For you body to keep burning more calories than you put into it, you have to do some action that will cause it to burn them. Sure, just sitting idle, you body is still using energy because of its normal processes such as your heart beating (which is a muscle in action), your digestive system working (which also uses muscles to push the food through the digestive tract) and all the other normal bodily processes.
But to keep them going requires relatively a little energy. Your body has the ability to shut down what it perceives as low priority functions to conserve energy, so even if you starve yourself, you will get to a point where you are burning hardly any energy. Of course, if you keep it up you will eventually die of malnutrition, but we won’t get into that here.
More is Needed
But what is worth knowing is that that by diet alone, you may well lose a lot of weight especially to begin with, but over time you will eventually reach a point where your body will start shutting down processes to conserve what stores of fat it has in readiness for a perceived period of starvation. Also, as soon as you resume normal eating, your body will then store more fat from the food it gets in readiness for the next period of starvation, whether it is coming or not.
This is why many dieters lose weight, then put it all back on again plus an extra few pounds. It’s known as yo-yo dieting and it does no one any good.
The best way to diet and lose weight is to combine that diet with exercise. This has a two fold benefit over dieting alone:-
The exercise forces your muscles to build strength and demand more energy to do so, which must come from the calories you consume and when they are used up, from your store of fat
Your metabolism is forced to increase thereby making the way in which your body burns the calories it consumes more efficient
These benefits are added to by the body not expecting a period of starvation, but the opposite. It forces it to build muscle bulk to cope with the extra workload.
This, in turn makes your metabolism use the body’s energy stores to feed the muscles which not only brings about weight loss but also tones up a previously flabby body so that you look slim, fit and healthy (which of course you are). That last point is really what dieter’s intend to happen and are pleasantly surprised at the results when they go about it in that way.
It also means that the excess pounds are kept off in the long term as long as the exercise is kept up, which means the diet can be far less restrictive in terms of variation and of calorie content while the dieter still maintains the right weight and body shape they had intended all along.
