Ten Important Do’s of Diabetic Foot

If you are diabetic (especially for long duration), you are at risk to develop diabetic foot. It is very important to know do’s and don’ts for preventing diabetic foot. Here are do’s and don’ts of diabetic foot.

  • Do wash your feet daily. It is important o wash feet daily at least twice, once in the morning, preferably before going out and again in the evening/night before going to bed. Use soap and plenty of clean lukewarm water to wash your feet. Dry your feet with soft towel/cloth after washing. Use talcum powder to keep your feet dry, if required. Make sure you dry spaces in between toes.
  • Do inspect your feet, including toes daily to check for cuts, bruises or any injuries that may be obvious. Ideally inspect your feet after washing and drying. Use mirror or someone to check your feet, if you cannot inspect your feet by yourself.
  • Do use soft socks. Use of soft and comfortable socks is important to prevent any friction, which may cause injury.
  • Do wear shoes that fit your feet perfectly and which are also comfortable to wear. Properly fitted shoes can prevent diabetic foot, whereas improperly fitted uncomfortable shoes can cause diabetic foot. Studies has shown that as many as half of the amputations involving diabetes foot are due to use of improperly fitted shoes. It is important to wear new shoes for short period at the beginning and stop using new shoes for sometime and then reuse again later on.
  • Do trim your toenails regularly before they overgrow and lead to any injury.
  • Do exercise regularly if you are diabetic and have risk of diabetic foot. Regular physical exercise helps to keep you fit physically, improves blood circulation to feet (thereby prevent diabetic foot) and the entire body, keeps your body weight under control, helps in keeping blood sugar normal (skeletal muscle can use glucose without need of insulin during exercise and thereby keep blood sugar low and improve utilization of insulin). ADA (American Diabetes Association) recommends brisk walking for at least 150 minutes per week spread over at least five days for diabetics.
  • Do reduce body weight. Diabetes with obesity increase risk of complications by more than two folds, including diabetic foot.
  • Do consult your diabetologist/podiatric physician regularly to know latest ways to prevent diabetes complications acre need to be taken, if complication is already present.
  • Do maintain your blood glucose level to within normal limit very strictly.
  • Do learn all you can about diabetes and all about its complications (not only diabetic foot) and ways to prevent them. If you are at risk of diabetic foot, you are at risk of other complications too.
